Spokane Makes Deal

Spokes Buy Lefty Fontana
SPOKANE, Dec. 13—Spokane Indians of the Western International Baseball League Saturday announced the outright purchase of Charles Fontana, a 22-year-old left-handed hitter from the champion Columbia, S.C. team of the South Atlantic League.
Fontana is the second player purchased in Spokane’s rebuilding program, Cal McIrvin, left-handed pitcher, was obtained from Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League earlier this month.
Indian President Roy Hotchkiss said Fontana is expected to give Spokane some slugging power in the outfield next season. He batted .253 last year after hitting .354 in 63 games with Columbia in 1951.
