WENATCHEE, Apr. 26 — A pair of five-hitters gave Wenatchee and Yakima a split in their Western International League Sunday double-header, with the hometown Chiefs pulling out a 2-1 win in the seven-inning nightcap after dropping the regulation opener, 6-3.
Lefty Hal Flinn held Wenatchee to five well-spaced hits in the first game as the Bears jumped on starter Charlie Beamon for five runs in the first two innings. Len Noren's double capped Yakima's two-run second frame.
Rookie righthander Art Amaya reversed things in the nightcap as he doled out five hits to Yakima and held the Bears scoreless until the seventh and final inning. He got out of the jam with the tying run at third.
Manager Mike McCormick was Wenatchee's big gun in the finale with two hits in three times at bat. Buddy Hjelmaa got two of Yakima's five hits.
The teams split their opening series of the season, 2-2.
