VICTORIA, B.C. — (UP) — Victoria Tyees upset the Vancouver Caps for the first time in six Western International League starts yesterday afternoon to take a 4 to 3 victory.
The win came off a steady, seven hit pitching job by Bob Drilling and fifth inning double by first baseman Chuck Abernathy which scored Cec Garriott for the winning run.
Caps' starter Bob Guldborg and manager Harvey Storey were thrown out of the game in the third by base umpire John Walsh for using profane language in protesting a call at third after the Tyees had scored twice.
Guldborg was relieved by Bob Stuart, making his first and last appearance in a Vancouver uniform. He took the loss and was released after the game.
Drilling, a righthanded pitcher from Tulare, was making his first start. He had been returned to the Pacific Coast League's Portland team by Oklahoma City, before being sold to Victoria.
In the nightcap, Don Pries crashed a clutch single off reliever Carl Gunnarson to score the winning run in the 13th inning.

VICTORIA, [Colonist, May 17]—Everyone agreed that Victoria Tyees need only pitching to be a strong contender for the championship they are defending, Yesterday, they got the pitching and looked like the champions they still are.
With Bob Drilling brilliant in the afternoon and Bill Prior and Bill Bottler sharing a fine 13-inning job under the lights at Royal Athletic Park, the Tyees snapped their five-game losing streak—at the hands of the Vancouver Capilanos—by taking a thrilling pair of one-run decisions, 4-3 and 5-4.
TYEES MOVE UP
The double defeat dropped the Caps from sharing the lead into second place and the two triumph moved the Tyees from sixth place to fourth.
Sharing the limelight with the pitching trio yesterday were three holdover veterans—manager Cec Garriott, first baseman Chuck Abernathy and third baseman Don Pries.
Abernathy’s fifth-inning double scored Garriott with the run that broke a 3-3 tie in the afternoon: Pries singled in the winning run with two out and the bases loaded in the fourth extra inning under the lights; and Garriott hit a two-run homer in the night game and fielded his position particularly well in both games.
Drilling, who lost his first home start last week when Tri-City scored five unearned runs to beat him, 5-2, ran afoul of more bad support yesterday when a third-inning error by Lu Branham gave the Caps two tallies they didn’t deserve.
CATCHES CORNERS
But Drilling wasn’t to be denied. Working the outside corner beautifully with fine control, he was doing at his best in the late stages and retired the last seven men in order. He walked only one and struck out seven.
The Tyees didn’t have to contend with Vancouver manager Harvey Storey in this one. After getting eight hits in the first two games, Drilling got his man on an easy ground chance in the first inning and base umpire Walsh took it from there. A bit put out when Walsh called Garriott safe on a double steal in the third inning, Storey was thumbed from the game for pushing Walsh and was immediately joined by Bud Guldborg, who had to have his say.
This brought about changes which didn’t hurt the Tyees at all. Storey’s clean-up spot in the batting order was taken by Jack Bukowatz, who failed twice with runners on third and first. Bob Stuart, a new righthander, took over from Guldborg and yielded the winning run.
Bottler, helped out twice by great catches by Garriott, went along smoothly for seven innings but got into trouble in the eighth when he walked two men. He got out of this one when K. Chorlton hit to Branham, who started a double play, but he couldn’t finish the ninth.
He walked Don Lundberg and Chuck Davis to start the inning and Garriott called on Prior. The lanky righthander hit pinch-hitter Bukowatz to load the sacks and Dick Briskey cleared the bases with a double to tie the score at 4-4,
PRIOR SETTLES
Prior settled down there, leaving the winning run stranded on third. He gave up two hits in the next four innings as Carl Gunnarson, making his second relief appearance of the day, matched him until the 13th,
Then Bob Moniz walked after Gunnarson had a 0-2 count and stole second. Garriott was given an intentional base on balls.
After Prior and Branham were put out, Bob Moniz worked Gunnarson for a base on balls after trailing, 0-2, in the count. He stole second, making it with a great slide and forcing the Caps to issue an intentional walk to Garriott. Gale Taylor also walked, filling the bases and setting the stage for Pries’ line single over third base.

Skurski broke up a pitching duel between the Esks' Ray McNulty and Art Amaya of the Chiefs. It was quite a thrilller for the 1,500 fans. The clubs were tied at 2-2 from the fourth inning to the 14th, then Wenatchee broke through for three runs. KENNEWICK, May 16—Tri-City booted away a Western International League baseball game Saturday night, taking a 12-10 trimming from Lewiston despite a heavier hitting attack.
The Braves made seven errors which Lewiston used in getting four unearned runs or enough to overtake the Tri-City 13-10 hitting margin.
Three of the Braves hits were homers, two by Len Tran and one by Tommy Marier. They neglected to put anyone on bases first, however.
Ernie Hockaday, Tri-City's starter, wasn't too helpful, issuing nine walks in a little over four innings before he was sent to the showers.
