Player Quits Diamond for Hits in Movies

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 13 — Chuck Connors has made his decision. He'll try for hits in the movies instead of on the baseball diamond.
That became official Thursday when the rangy first baseman sent his application for voluntary retirement to President Don Stewart of the Los Angeles Angels.
A former major leaguer with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. Connors figures at 32 he's reached the twilight of a professional sports career that included basketball as well as baseball.
Currently the tall slugger plays the role of Burt Lancaster's pal and Virginia Mayo's sweetheart in “Sulu Sea.” That's his fifth part since he parlayed an after-dinner rendition of “Casey at the Bat” and his baseball activities into a movie tryout.
A casting director was more impressed with Connors' clownish before-game than his home run hitting antics and offered to test him for pictures. His first part was in “Pat and Mike.”
