SALEM — Salem, after winning the opener 6-3, was blanked 5-0 by Tri-City in a Western International League doubleheader here Sunday.
It was the first shutout the league-leading Senators have suffered since early in the season.
Bob Snyder, who went the route for Tri-City, scattered six hits to Salem batters.
Third Baseman Jack Warren led Tri-City's third inning five-run spurt with his three-run homer. Manager Edo Vanni and Vic Buccola drove in the other tallies.
Home runs by Jerry Ballard and Bob Nelson highlighted Salem's scoring in the first game. Ballard scored two runs in the second inning and Nelson collected his in the sixth with the bases empty.

WENATCHEE — The Spokane Indians evened their current Western International League series at one game apiece Saturday night by walloping the Wenatchee Chiefs, 9 to 2.
Bill Sheets with a double and a single four runs batted in and Jim Command with three runs batted in led the Spokane attack.
Southpaw Art Worth effectively spaced 10 hits to gain credit for the victory.

VANCOUVER, B. C. — The Calgary Stampeders jumped on two Vancouver pitchers for 13 hits Saturday night to defeat the Capilanos, 6-1, in a Western International League baseball game.
The win gave Calgary a 2-1 edge in the series here.
The Stamps racked up three runs in the sixth inning. Gus Travos tripled and scored on a single by Charlie Mead.
Mead was sacrificed to second base, sent to third on a single by Jim Mellinger and scored on the same play when Vancouver's left-fielder, Gale Taylor, let Mellinger's single go through him.
Mellinger came in after the catch on a long fly after he moved to third on a single by pitcher Gerry Levinson.

VANCOUVER [Keith Matthews, News-Herald, July 13]—The “in with the new” which the Capilanos are trying out as their change of pace in the WIL’s second-half baseball campaign failed miserably in its first try Saturday as Calgary stepped on the Caps 6-1.
With Bob Duretto and Gene Petralli in the lineup and Jim Wert and Don Lundberg both departed for their homes, the Capilanos could manage no better than one of their feeblest efforts before a close to 2000 house.
Gerry Levinson, who beat Vancouver once before with a spectacular job of pitching, four-hitted them Saturday and hung the collar on both Duretto and Petralli.
In Duretto’s case it could be expected. Bob hasn’t seen a ball park since September, 1952 when he was a Capilano. It will take him at least a week to get his batting eye and maybe two to find his “sea legs.”
Petralli has been playing some semi-pro ball, but he managed no better than a few pop-ups.
The newcomers, however, were not to blame for the loss. Nobody was in face of Levinson’s cagey pitching.
Bob Roberts kept pace with Gerry for five innings then bust loose at the seams in the sixth as the Stampeders chased across three runs. They chased Bob for good in the seventh with three more, as the short right-hander picked up his first loss since joining the Caps.
As the new deal started to take hold, it was noted that all efforts to sell or trade Wert and Lundberg had failed. A deal had been cooking with Victoria, but the Tyees poured cold water on it Saturday, so Wert and Lundberg packed their duffle bags and went home. They are on the suspended list and will remain their indefinitely unless a sudden sale or trade pops up.
DIAMOND DUST – The Capilanos have a day off today and will travel to Yakima Tuesday for the opening of a week-long road trip … Pete Hernandez pitches tomorrow night with Van Fletcher following him Wednesday … One more player is expected in this week.

LEWISTON, Idaho — Ken Richardson and Mel Wasley both hit home runs in the third inning to build up Lewiston's winning lead as the Broncs downed Yakima 9-6 in a Saturday night Western International League baseball game.
Richardson opened the inning with his homer and Wasley's big hit came after Artie Wilson was safe at first on a fielder's choice and Glen Tuckett had singled. The Broncs had already pushed over one run in the first and two in the second and Wasley's tally proved to be the winning point.

VICTORIA — Righthander Bill Prior allowed only six hits as Victoria Tyees defeated Edmonton Eskimos 3-2 here Saturday night after Edmonton had taken the afternoon game of their day-night Western International baseball doubleheader 4-2.
Prior picked up his ninth victory against six defeats while John Conant, who allowed eight hits in pitching the distance for Edmonton, took his seventh loss in 21 games.
Don Prios doubled home Tyees' first run in the opening frame but Edmonton went ahead 2-1 with a pair of runs in the sixth on successive singles by Clint Weaver, Dan Prentice and Andy Skurski and manager Bob Sturgeon's infield out.

SORIANO GETS LUNDBERG
Caps Purchase Tulsa Catcher

YAKIMA, Wash. [April 20]—Vancouver Capilanos got themselves a catcher and looked like they could use some more help as they wound up spring training here with a pair of weekend games with Yakima Bears. The worrisome catching problem was solved, at least partially, when general manager Dewey Soriano announced that he had bought Don Lundberg from Tulsa of the Texas League.
Lundberg, with Seattle this spring, had been sold to Tulsa by the Rainiers. But the Suds helped to get him back to the coast when the Caps lost Sam Hairston to Chicago White Sox.
Soriano is high on Lundberg who, he says, looked very good this spring with Seattle. “All we need now is an outfielder,” said Soriano, “and we’ll be in pretty good shape for opening day.” That’s Thursday at Vancouver.
But Dewey hopes the club will look better at home Thursday than they did here on the weekend. They did most everything wrong in losing 6-4 Saturday night to the Bears. And again 18-13 in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader. There was some improvement when they beat the Bears 5-2 in Sunday’s nightcap.
Sloppy fielding, featuring some weird gyrations by rookie catcher Jack Johnson, contributed heavily to the Caps’ downfall. The pitching wasn’t too sound, either, with almost everybody taking a rapping. The weekend results left the Caps with a record of 14 wins and three loses over the spring schedule.

Lewiston, racked up six runs in the first three innings to go ahead 6-0 before Spokane's catcher, Bill Sheets, homered in the third frame.

SILVERTON, Ore., April 19—The Salem Senators of the Western International league made their Oregon debut here Sunday, defeating the Silverton Red Sox 8-2.

Bowman was in trouble in the first inning, but a fast double play from Stan Stewart to Les Corcoran to Manager Red Jcssen eased some of the the pressure.
Bowman walked Jerry Kruger of Calgary, and Gus Stathos singled behind their runner to put two men on and set up the double play, Kruger going to third. He scored on a bloop single by Charley Mead, and the Calgary nine took a one run lead.
Mead scored on Corcoran's error at second after Don Bricker singled to center, and Bob Sangster lined to Third Baseman John Hack to end the inning.
Second man up for Calgary in the second frame, Haig Lavery, tripled, and scored on Joe Orrell's ground out to put Calgary three runs ahead.
First Russet Hit
Joe Borich got the first Russet hit, as he singled to center to start the second inning. Pete Estrada was safe on an error by the first baseman, but John Hack hit into a double play to erase Borich at third, and Stan Stewart struck out to end the inning.
The Russets set Calgary down in one, two, three order in the third, all on ground balls as Bowman's curve ball was breaking sharply.
The Russeta threatened in the sixth when Reno Barbisan, who went in to relieve Bowman, lived on the third baseman's error and Phil Staehle, Russet leadoff man, doubled to deep center, after Second Baseman Jim Landis struck out and Red Jessen popped out. Catcher Cuno Barragan grounded out to end the inning.
Idaho Falls roared back into the ball game in their hall of the seventh inning.
Pete Estrada, laced a single down the left field foul lane. And Stewart banged out a sharp single to left field. Then little Larry Nenna rapped out a 375 foot triple to score the two base runners, scoring himself on Barbisan's long fly to center field. That tied the ball game at three all.
Calgary came back to go ahead in their half of the eighth frame. Pitcher Joe Orrell singled to right and was sacrificed to second. He scored on Stathos' single.
