VICTORIA [Doug Peden, Colonist, June 16]—Bill Prior pitched three-hit shutout ball through eight innings at Royal Athletic Park last night before losing a shutout in the ninth frame as he paced the Victoria Tyees to a 7-1 Western International League triumph over the Calgary Stampeders.
In tossing his sixth victory of the season, the lean righthander yielded a scratch single to catcher Don Bricker in the third, another single in the fourth and Don Hunter’s two-base blow in the eighth, before losing his touch in the ninth.
CLARK ERRS
First baseman Jim Mellinger hustled out a double to open the inning and held second as Bricker popped out. Bob Bonebrake topped a slow roller towards shortstop and Jim Clark, in a desperate attempt to cut the fleet outfielder down, threw late and wide to first, with Mellinger rounding third and heading for the plate.
Abernathy corralled Clark’s errant toss and heaved the ball past catcher Milt Martin as Mellinger tallied ahead of the throw and Bonebrake ambled down to second. However, the run became earned when manager Gene Lillard drilled a pinch-single with Bonebrake holding third.
FINE INFIELD PLAY
The Tyees’ infield climaxed a night of fine play by turning Gus Stathos’ ground smash into a game-ending double play by way of third base.
Victoria got away to an early lead when Bob Moniz drilled a pitch out of the park with one away in the first and Garriott, after walking and reaching second when Hunter dropped Bricker’s throw, came across on Abernathy’s hit-and-run single.
Two walks, three singles and a hit batsman gave the Tyees three more in the sixth, and Martin blasted a two-run homer in the eighth off reliefer Bill Stites.
TRY PINCH-HITTER
Glen Hittner, who started for the Stamps, went out for a pinch-hitter in the seventh. Previous to last night’s contest, Hittner owned a record of 4 and 5 and had completed seven games.
The Tyee management came up with some definite news on player changes last night with the announcement that Herman Charles had been released outright and outfielder Gale Taylor sold to Vancouver. Pitcher Pete Younie, who toiled for both Lewiston and Wenatchee this season, has been signed.
HELBIG HERE
Outfielder Dwane Helbig checked in at the park during last night’s game and is expected to play tonight. Granny Gladstone should be in the line-up tomorrow and pitcher High King’s arrival is expected about Friday.
A large crowd is expected at the ball park tonight with the Tyees admitting all ladies free of charge and an added incentive to attend will be the presentation of one of Calgary mayor Don McKay’s stetsons to a luck seat holder.

VANCOUVER— Too many men left on the bases spelled defeat for the Vancouver Capilanos Monday night as the Edmonton Eskimos squeezed out a 1-0 Western International Baseball League win.
Caps threatened in almost every inning but left 12 men stranded on the paths over the route. It was the first time they had been shut out since the season opener here.
Right-hander Pat Utley struck out five and issued five walks in picking up his second win against no defeats for Edmonton,
Van Fletcher, who also went the distance, was the loser.
Eskimos scored the only run in the second inning when first baseman Clint Weaver singled to centre, went all the way to third on a single by Don Prentice, and scored on catcher Dick Morgan's long fly to centre field.

SPOKANE — Lewiston downed Spokane, 11 to 5, in 11 innings Monday night in a Western International League baseball game featuring an unscheduled wrestling match in the seventh inning.
The Broncos salted away the contest with six runs in their half of the eleventh but most of the fireworks occurred in the seventh when Don Osborn, Spokane manager, thought Lewiston hurler Don Carter had thrown a bean ball at Jim Command.
Osborn started to the mound for Carter but was halted by a flying tackle by Bill Brenner, the Lewiston manager, who applied a headlock. Before it was over players of both teams got into the act and both Osborn and Brenner were ejected from the game when things calmed down.
Close observers said there weren't any good punches in the hassle, but the crowd of 1,222 ate it up.
The Broncs overcame a 5-1 deficit in the eighth with a quick four runs off three hits and two bases on balls to tie the score.
Then Art Wilson started the 11th inning off with a single. From there, Lewiston put together four more singles, two free passes to first and a Spokane error to make their six-run spree.
Clint Cameron, Lewiston backstopper, drove in four runs for Lewiston, while first sacker Larry Barton sent three runs across the plate.
Command drove in the first three runs for the Indians. Will Hafey brought in the final two, banging out a home run in the seventh with Stan Palys aboard.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Vancouver Capilanos combined hitting power with tight fielding to nose out Spokane 3-2 in their Wednesday night Western International League baseball game and take their three-game series 2-1.
Indians threatened to tie the game for the second time in the eighth inning after Capilanos had won their 3-2 edge. But a well-aimed throw to the plate put out Will Hafey who had singled, advanced to second on a walk and tried to get home on Carl Bush's single.

Eskimos scored three times in the seventh inning and were stopped then only by a triple-play.
Jim Hedgecock, relieving Bob Snyder with two on and none out in the seventh, threw one pitch to Clint Weaver who laid down a perfect sacrifice. In quick succession a man was picked off second base and a throw to the plate caught Sam Kanelos trying to score.
Eskimos' starting pitcher, Pat Utley, after walking six men in the first inning, was pulled for Paul Tisnerat who was credited with the win after John Conant came in on the ninth to put out the fire.

VICTORIA [Doug Peden, Colonist, June 11]—Lewiston Broncs demonstrated ably at Royal Athletic Park last night just why they are rolling along at the top of the Western International League as they shelled three Victoria pitchers for 15 hits and a 10-4 decision over the Tyees.
Broncs’ manager Bill Brenner, choosing an opportune time to take his pitching turn, received a seven-run cushion in the first two innings and coasted to his eighth win against one loss. Brenner walked on while striking out five.
HODGES STARTS
Southpaw Berlyn Hodges started for the Tyees and was greeted by Al Heist’s lead-off home run and gave up three more tallies before the first inning was over. Brenner blasted Hodges’ first pitch in the second off the top of the centre-field fence for four bases and, after yielding a walk and single with one out, Hodges was relieved by Zeb Walker.
Although hit hard during his stay, Walker limited the Lewiston veterans to seven hits, including Kenny Richardson’s lead-off homer in the fourth, before going out for a pinch-hitter in the seventh. Bill Prior finished up and yielded the final Bronc tally.
MARTIN HOMERS
Tyees scored their first run in the fifth on second baseman Glen Tuckett’s throwing error and added singletons in each of the last three frames, the final run coming on Milt Martin’s home run.
Manager Cec Garriott shifted his infield last night with Don Pries moving over to third base and Lu Branham taking over at second.
Pries was the main victim of the heavy bat barrage as third base became a favorite target for the Broncs. Although charged with four errors the Tyees’ handy-man handled seven other chances flawlessly and came up with possibly the best defensive play of the season when he made a diving, inches-high catcher of Tuckett’s liner in the seventh.
INVADE MAINLAND
The Tyees invade Vancouver tonight for the first game of a four-game series with the Capilanos and return home Monday to open a six-day home stand against Calgary.
